Back to School: Buying Used is a Good Life Lesson

As we celebrate Labour Day (the day we don’t labour) we conclude our series on Back to School money saving tips, and we present the most obvious money saving tip for parents of students going back to school: Buy Used.

We all remember as children being forced to wear hand-me-down clothes, and using used school supplies.  We told ourselves that when we became parents, we would buy our children all new “stuff” each year.

But now that you are a parent, you realize that buying used makes very good financial sense.  So, how do you convince your children that it’s a good idea to buy used, or to use used things?

To start, you are the parent, and it’s your decision.

Also, children need to learn that they can’t get everything they want, all the time.  We live in difficult economic times; it’s not the booming 1980’s and 1990’s any longer.  Frugality and prudence are virtues, and we should teach them to our children.

So, as we celebrate Labour Day and go back to school, let’s use this as an opportunity to teach our children financial lessons that will help them for the rest of their lives.
