Before you buy, have a cooling off period

You went shopping and saw a great new power tool, or pair of shoes, or something else that you want, but don’t really need.  Don’t be an impulse shopper.  Make a deal with yourself that you always wait 48 hours before making a purchase of more than $100 (or whatever other limit you want to set for yourself).  During that cooling off period you can decide whether or not you really need that item.  By waiting, you may decide you don’t need it.

And, while you are waiting, shop around.  Perhaps you can find a better deal somewhere else, so if you do decide to make the purchase, you will at least be getting it for the best price.
