By law, your are entitled to receive one free copy of your credit report each year.  Today’s tip: get one now.

Your credit report is important, because lenders use your credit score to determine whether or not they will lend you money.  That’s why you want to check your credit report before you apply for a new mortgage, car loan, or other loan.

There are many services that, for a fee, will get you a complete copy of your credit report, and monitor changes in your score.  It is also possible to simply contact the credit bureau to get a copy of your credit report.

In Canada, you can contact Equifax or Trans Union.

If there are problems or errors on your report, you want to know about them immediately, so you can take steps to correct them, before you apply for a loan.

Don’t wait; if you plan to borrow in the future, get a copy of your credit report today.
