Track your Big Expenses with a Mini Budget

Everyone hates to hear it but the most important advice to get control of your personal finances is budgeting. We strongly recommend that you make a budget, (and many of you agree, since our make a budget post is one of our most popular tips).

But wait, you say, that’s too hard!  I can’t keep track of every one of my expenses!

Actually, yes you can, but to start, keep it simple and just track your big expenses, with a mini budget.  For example, just keep track of your food purchases.  Make a goal to cut what you spend on groceries, fast food, eating out, and coffee breaks by 20%.  That’s all you need to track, so you can focus in on saving money.

And, as you get used to tracking food, you can move up to tracking all of your expenses to save even more money.
