Consumer credit counselling is provided by accredited credit counselling agencies. These are non-profit agencies created to help individuals experiencing financial distress and trying to solve their money problems through debt negotiation and settlement with their creditors. At this agency, the professional who will work with you is a debt management consultant, also known as a credit counsellor.

Because the agency is not-for-profit, your credit counsellor is really working for you.

The role of credit counsellors

Your credit counsellor has two main functions.

First, they work with you to determine what solution is best for you. They will help you make a budget so you know how much you can afford to pay each month to repay your debt. They may recommend that you file a Debt Management Plan, or they may suggest another solution, such as a debt consolidation loan, a consumer proposal, or even personal bankruptcy.

The other main job of your credit counsellor is to negotiate the plan with your creditors, if you decide to file a Debt Management Plan.

Your credit counsellor is professionally trained and accredited, and abides by a code of ethics which ensures that you get compassionate, knowledgeable help to find the best possible solution to your money problems.

I think credit counselling might work for me, what should I do now?

If you have credit card and bank loan debts and think a Debt Management Plan would work for you, credit counselling may be the way for you to go.

We suggest that you research your options in regards to credit counselling in Canada, and then consult a credit counsellor or a bankruptcy trustee for further information and help. The expertise and experience of these debt management consultants speaks up for them and makes it possible for them to assist you in overcoming your money problems.
